In 1838 William Hinton's started the "Fábrica do Torreão"; a factory where the juice was pressed from the suikkerriet. This local sugar cane juice turned out to be of remarkably high quality and extremely suitable for the production of high-quality rum from which the Madeira Agricola Rum was eventually born.
